Mountain Town

In the late 1800s, following the Cripple Creek gold rush, miners were looking for their next big gold strike. Some thought they’d found it in Guffey.

Established in the 1890s, Guffey was the center of activity for the Freshwater Mining District, producing gold, copper, lead, and zinc. In its brief heyday between 1892 and 1902, Guffey was home to 40 businesses and 500 residents. Not much gold was ever found here, so the boom was short-lived. Although the days of miners in Guffey are long past, ranching and lumbering are still primary industries. and the vibrant wild spirit is alive and well!
